WHIPPET RESCUE
I personally work with three different rescue groups;
Seattle Purebred Dog Rescue ~ SPDR * Whippet Representative - The oldest and largest still in operation all breed rescue in the country.
Western Washington Whippet Association ~ WWWA * Rescue Chairperson - Local to Western Wa.
Whippet Rescue and Placement ~ WRAP * Regional Director for; Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington
We get Whippets from shelters, stray, owner surrenders; moving, divorce, etc... The dogs average 4 years old, occasionally 1 year olds and 14 year olds! We get from 4 to 14 a year in Washington state. (combined number from WRAP, WWWA & SPDR) We take them into a foster home where they are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, have blood work or dentals if needed, health checked, and get a collar and ID tag. We keep the dog a week or two (or until we find the best home) to try to determine what kind of home the dog needs; no kids, kids? no cats, cats? can be left alone 8 hrs, or can't be? Almost all dogs we get are housebroken, or housebroken by the time they leave the foster home.
We take applications from people with completely fenced in yards (we recommend a minimum height of 4.5', the only exception being for elderly dogs) and check references to try to match up a dog with a family. Some dogs need someone who is home a lot, some are ok alone more... some really want another dog companion, some couldn't care! We then call the applicant when we have a dog we think might fit in to their family and have them come down to visit the dog. We then schedule a home visit for the foster home/club member to visit the potential adopter, to check for appropriate fencing, etc. Please go to one of the sites to download an application, or contact me, and I can email or snail mail you one. Once we get an application, you will be contacted to see if you have any questions about whippet rescue. If you'd like more information in general, feel free to contact me.
